Relief for Foot & Ankle Conditions

Your feet are intricate structures that bear the weight of your entire body. When structural problems or chronic pain interfere with your daily activities, you need a clear diagnosis and a structured treatment plan.

At Podiatry International Barbados, we focus on evidence-based, non-surgical care and minor in-clinic procedures to reduce pain, improve function, and keep you moving comfortably.

When surgery is required, we coordinate your care with trusted orthopedic or podiatric surgeons.

Our Treatment Approach

We begin with a conservative treatment philosophy. Most conditions can be managed effectively without surgery using:

  • Custom orthotics and bracing
  • Footwear modification and activity changes
  • Physical therapy and exercise programs
  • Medication, injections, or other non-invasive therapies

If your condition does not respond to conservative care—or imaging shows advanced joint or soft-tissue damage—we will discuss your options and, when appropriate, arrange referral to a qualified surgeon. We continue to support you before and after any operation with biomechanical assessment, orthotics, and rehabilitation guidance.

Conditions We Manage

Bunions (Hallux Valgus)

Bunions are bony prominences at the base of the big toe caused by joint misalignment. We provide:

  • Thorough assessment and imaging (if needed)
  • Custom orthotics to reduce pressure and slow progression
  • Footwear advice and padding to relieve discomfort

If your bunion causes significant pain or deformity that conservative care cannot control, we will discuss surgical options and refer you to an appropriate surgeon. We then work with you post-operatively to optimize healing and long-term foot function.

Hammertoes

Hammertoes result from imbalances in the muscles and joints of the toes. Our role includes:

  • Identifying underlying biomechanical causes
  • Recommending splints, padding, and footwear changes
  • Providing custom orthotics to offload affected joints

When deformity becomes rigid or painful despite these measures, we help coordinate referral for surgical correction and guide your rehabilitation after the procedure.

Morton’s Neuroma and Nerve Pain

A neuroma is a painful thickening of nerve tissue in the ball of the foot, often between the third and fourth toes. We manage neuromas with:

  • Activity and footwear modification
  • Custom orthotics to redistribute pressure
  • Padding and, where appropriate, injections

If symptoms persist and surgery is considered the best option, we will refer you to an appropriate surgical specialist and remain involved in your long-term follow-up.

Minor In-Clinic Procedures

For certain localized problems, we may perform simple in-clinic procedures under local anaesthetic, such as:

  • Treatment of stubborn plantar warts
  • Removal or reduction of superficial skin lesions
  • Management of painful or severely ingrown toenails

These are quick, office-based procedures designed to minimize downtime. All treatments are carried out within the legal scope of podiatric practice in Barbados and only when clinically appropriate.

What to Expect

Before Any Procedure or Referral

  • Comprehensive assessment and, when needed, imaging
  • Review of your medical history and risk factors
  • Clear explanation of your diagnosis and treatment options
  • Discussion of when referral for surgery may be beneficial

After In-Clinic Procedures or Surgery Performed Elsewhere

  • Regular follow-ups with your podiatrist
  • Support for pain management (if needed)
  • Guidance on footwear, activity levels, and return to sport or work
  • Recommendation and fitting of orthotics or braces when helpful
  • Ongoing monitoring to prevent recurrence or new problems

Are You a Candidate for Advanced Treatment?

You may benefit from more advanced treatment or referral to a surgeon if:

  • Conservative treatment has not relieved your pain
  • Foot or ankle problems are limiting daily activities or work
  • You have progressive deformity, joint damage, or nerve symptoms

Our podiatrists will assess your condition, explain your options, and, when appropriate, coordinate with surgeons and other healthcare providers to ensure you receive the right care at the right time. Contact Podiatrist International and find out if you’re qualified for advanced treatments.

Risks and Considerations

All medical treatments—including minor in-clinic procedures and surgery performed by other providers—carry potential risks such as infection, delayed healing, or persistent symptoms.

  • We help minimize these risks by:
  • Careful screening and assessment before any procedure
  • Providing clear aftercare instructions
  • Close follow-up and monitoring of your progress

Many patients experience significant, lasting improvement when podiatric care, orthotics, footwear changes, and (when needed) surgical intervention are combined into one coordinated plan.
