Children’s Feet Problems

Understanding Children’s Foot Problems

We understand that the early years of development are critical for healthy foot function. Many foot conditions seen in adulthood begin in childhood, but with the right support and care, most can be corrected or effectively managed before they become lifelong issues.

Children may not always communicate pain clearly, but signs like frequent tripping, limping, avoidance of activity, or uneven shoe wear may indicate a foot or ankle concern that needs attention.

Common Conditions in Children

Flat Feet

Flat feet are very common in infants and young children due to the soft, undeveloped nature of the foot arch. While most children naturally develop arches as they grow, some retain a low or collapsed arch structure, often associated with excessive pronation (inward ankle rolling). If flat feet cause discomfort or poor posture, intervention may be recommended.

In-Toeing and Out-Toeing

Some children walk with their feet pointing inward (in-toeing) or outward (out-toeing). This may result from hip rotation, shin bone angle, or foot positioning. While many cases resolve naturally, persistent or worsening gait abnormalities should be evaluated.

Toe Walking

Occasional toe walking is normal during early development, but consistent toe walking beyond age 2 may be linked to muscular or neurological issues and should be assessed by a specialist.

Heel Pain (Sever’s Disease)

This common condition affects active children during growth spurts. It occurs when the heel’s growth plate becomes irritated due to repetitive stress. Proper footwear, activity modification, and orthotics can provide relief.

Warts, Ingrown Toenails & Fungal Infections

Kids are often exposed to communal areas like swimming pools and locker rooms. These environments increase the risk of skin conditions that require prompt attention.
